Curiously enough, given its association with the city, Friends never shot a single episode here. Even when the show ventured outside its home base at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank for the fifth season finale it was for London, not New York. Many fans assumed the title sequence in which the six cast members frolic through a fountain to The Rembrandts’ “I'll Be There for You” was shot at the Cherry Hill Fountain in Central Park, but that too was filmed at Warner Brothers. The same fountain shows up in the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, subbing for Salem, Massachusetts. Exteriors of the apartment building where Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler all lived are, however, legit New York at 90 Bedford Street in the Village. The success of Friends led to multiple attempts at imitation, the most successful of which may have been How I Met Your Mother, likewise set in Manhattan and shot in LA.
